Keynote presentation

“THE PROFIT PARADOX”  by Prof. Dr. Jan Eeckhout

Date: Thursday 9 December at 9:30

In his book The Profit Paradox, Prof. Dr. Jan Eeckhout describes how, over the past forty years, a handful of companies have reaped most of the rewards of technological advancements—acquiring rivals, securing huge profits, and creating brutally unequal outcomes for workers.(…)
Drawing on his own groundbreaking research and telling the stories of common workers throughout, Jan Eeckhout demonstrates how market power has suffocated the world of work, and how, without better mechanisms to ensure competition, it could lead to disastrous market corrections and political turmoil.

Participation is for free but registration is mandatory.

BLCC Annual BBQ hosted by Kilcroney Furniture & our President Anny Verwijs

Our annual BBQ hosted by Kilcroney Furniture and our President Anny Verwijs went down treat this year. Despite the heavy rain in the morning and a lot of make shift tarpaulins, the sunshine eventually shone to put a big smile on everyone’s face.

The kids enjoyed an Emoji bouncy castle while the adults indulged in succulent steaks, lamb chops and delicious salads.

The wine and Belgian Beers were downed with much gusto and laughter whereas the desserts were definitely the stars of the day.

A great time was had by all and we added another successful event to the calendar of the BLCC in Ireland.

A wonderful time was had by all at the Belgian National Day Reception hosted by The Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium and Mrs Pierre-Emmanuel De Bauw.  It was such a well organised event with delicious food, excellent wine and of course the traditional Belgian Chips & Beer!

The weather was very kind and we were able to enjoy the ambiance of the garden with the beautiful sound of the Jan Lozad Trio with a moving rendition of the National anthems of Ireland and Belgium.

The staff were extremely helpful and attentive and it was wonderful to see different nationalities all celebrating the Belgian National Day.

Big Time. Design Friends & Luxembourg City Film Festival.

02.03.2018, 7 p.m. Ciné Utopia

2018 marks the first year of Design Friends’ collaboration with the Luxembourg City Film Festival. The audience will get the exclusive opportunity to see firsthand Kaspar Astrup Schroder’s documentary “Big Time,†an adoring profile of the Danish “starchitect†Bjarke Ingels.

Bjarke Ingels started out as a young man dreaming of creating cartoons. Now, he has been named “one of architecture’s biggest innovators” by The Wall Street Journal, and “one of the 100 Most Influential People on the Planet†by Time Magazine. Big Timefollows Bjarke over the course of seven years (2009-2016), struggling to finish his biggest project so far. We are let into Bjarke’s creative processes as well as the endless compromises that his work entails, and we are at his side when his personal life too starts putting pressure on him.

“I started feeling that the film had the potential of becoming even more universal. That it didn’t ‘only’ have the potential of conveying interesting architecture as well as the fascinating brain behind all of it, but it could also paint the greater picture of the modern man and the choices he has to make in order to find happiness†. Kaspar Astrup Schröder

Denmark , 2017 / 93 min / English and Danish OV with English subtitles / Documentary
